Nigel Slater trades his whisk for a trowel in a new gardening column

Nigel Slater, the renowned cook and writer, is joining our website as a new gardening columnist. His first piece will appear in the March 2024 issue, focusing on spring planting and the joys of the season. Slater brings decades of experience—not just in food, but also in nurturing his own urban garden in London.

Slater has spent 30 years as a food columnist for the Observer and has written several award-winning books. His childhood memoir, Toast, even inspired adaptations for radio, film, and theatre. But gardening has long been another passion.

His small London garden, often featured on his Instagram, was designed by two leading horticulturists: Dan Pearson and Monty Don. Slater’s love for Japanese aesthetics shines through in its layout, though he also admits to whimsical wishes—like a soft-serve ice-cream machine and garden fairies. Readers can expect a monthly column from Slater, chronicling his year in the garden. He will also appear on the Talking Gardens podcast, sharing more insights. Subscriptions to our website will grant access to his regular updates.

The March 2024 issue marks the start of Slater’s gardening column, where he will explore seasonal tasks and personal reflections. His blend of culinary expertise and green-fingered enthusiasm promises a fresh perspective for readers. Subscribers will find his monthly contributions alongside other gardening features on the site.
