Crocuses on the Roof - Nieblum's Blooming Curiosity - Nieblum's blooming rooftop garden preserves a fading Frisian tradition

A rooftop garden in Nieblum has become a local attraction, drawing both residents and visitors with its vibrant display. The Old Frisian Tea House, topped with blooming crocuses, tulips, and daffodils, stands out as a rare example of traditional craftsmanship. Behind this floral spectacle is Peter Maas, who has carefully maintained the garden for years.

The flowers grow in the sod of the thatched roof, not the thatch itself. This unique setup sits atop a listed heritage site, featuring an old turf ridge—a method once common in the region. Today, only around 20 to 30 houses on the island of Föhr still preserve this traditional roof style, while across Schleswig-Holstein, fewer than 100 remain, mostly on the North Frisian Islands.

Peter Maas first planted the bulbs years ago and replants them each winter to keep the display alive. Despite approaching 90, he remains committed to tending the garden. If climbing the ladder ever becomes too challenging, his son is ready to step in. The rooftop has turned into a favourite spot for photos. Tourists and locals alike stop to admire the miniature sea of flowers, a testament to both tradition and dedication.

The Old Frisian Tea House's rooftop garden continues to thrive under Peter Maas's care. His efforts ensure the flowers return each spring, while the building itself preserves a fading architectural tradition. For now, the garden remains a bright and living piece of Nieblum's heritage.
