Newcastle's Quayside West acquisition accelerates stalled regeneration plans
A major step forward in Newcastle's regeneration plans has been announced with the acquisition of Quayside West. The site, the largest land parcel in Forth Yards, is now under public sector ownership after being purchased by Homes England. Local leaders have hailed the move as a turning point for the long-stalled area.
Quayside West covers a significant brownfield area in Newcastle, with space for around 1,100 new homes. The acquisition marks a key moment in the wider transformation of Forth Yards, a project delayed for over two decades. Peter Denton, Chief Executive of Homes England, called the purchase a catalyst for regeneration after years of inactivity.
Mayor Dame Norma Redfearn DBE described the investment as a huge leap forward in building a thriving new community. She emphasised its role in creating vibrant neighbourhoods for residents. Cllr Nick Kemp, Leader of Newcastle City Council, also highlighted the site's potential for sustainable housing and strong transport links. The project involves collaboration between Newcastle City Council, North of Tyne Combined Authority, Network Rail, and Homes England. North of Tyne Mayor Jamie Driscoll noted that the region is already delivering 1,985 new homes on brownfield land, with a focus on affordability and low-carbon design. The acquisition of Quayside West reinforces the commitment to decent housing and revitalising neglected urban spaces.
The purchase of Quayside West brings the site under public control, accelerating plans for housing and regeneration. Detailed proposals for sustainable mixed-use development and transport connections will follow as planning progresses. The move signals a renewed push to unlock the full potential of Forth Yards.
