New York's First Floating Sauna Opens on Saratoga Lake with a Scandinavian Twist
New York's first public floating sauna has opened on Saratoga Lake. KOS Sauna, inspired by Norwegian wood-fired sauna boats, offers a unique hot-cold ritual paired with a plunge into the water. Founder Kate Butchart, who lived in Norway for seven years, worked with a Norwegian architect to bring the experience to life.
The sauna is docked at 550 Union Ave in Saratoga Springs. Guests can book social sessions or private group visits. Each 90-minute cycle includes a Finnish-style sauna followed by a refreshing dip in Saratoga Lake.
After the session, visitors can relax with wood-fired pizza and local craft beers at Lago by Druthers. The venue also hosts themed events, such as morning meditations and silent hours. KOS Sauna joins a small but growing trend of floating sauna boats outside Norway. At least two others exist in Germany: one at Thermen & Badewelt Sinsheim, the world's first autonomous floating sauna boat, and another at Inselhotel Potsdam on a lake. Research suggests regular sauna use—four to seven times a week—may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and death. Benefits can also include reduced inflammation, improved blood pressure, and better focus.
KOS Sauna brings a Scandinavian-inspired wellness experience to upstate New York. The floating venue combines heat therapy, cold plunges, and social relaxation. It is now open for bookings, offering a new way to unwind by the lake.
