New rail upgrades set to transform travel in Bergisches Städtedreieck by 2031
Plans for improved rail connections in the Bergisches Städtedreieck are gaining momentum ahead of the 2031 Federal Horticultural Show (BUGA). A proposed new Regional Express line between Bochum, Hagen, Wuppertal, and Cologne could transform travel in the region. Officials are also pushing for expanded services on the S7 commuter line to better serve visitors and residents alike. The VRR (Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr) is in talks with the state transport ministry to secure funding for key transport upgrades. A central part of the proposal is a new Regional Express route, which would include a stop at Solingen Central Station. If approved, this line could enable a half-hourly service toward Cologne, making the area far more accessible for tourists and commuters.
The S7 commuter rail line is already seen as essential for sustainable travel in the region. Before its 2024 renovation, it carried around 16,000 daily passengers. However, during a five-month closure last year, services were replaced by buses due to limited capacity on the Riedbahn. Now, with the upcoming Frankfurt–Mannheim high-speed line set to free up space, plans include increasing S7 services to quarter-hourly intervals and upgrading Zeppelinheim station as part of wider improvements. Green Party representatives Leon Kröck and Timo Schmidt have welcomed the developments as a victory for their advocacy. The proposals align with broader goals to boost climate-friendly transport, including expanded local public services. Additional stops and extra rail connections around BUGA 2031 are also under discussion to ensure smooth access for visitors. The Bergisches Städtedreieck—covering Wuppertal, Solingen, and Remscheid—already attracts tourists with its cultural sites, landscapes, and strong transport links. BUGA 2031 is expected to further raise the area's profile, making efficient infrastructure even more critical.
The proposed rail upgrades would strengthen connections across the tri-city region and support the goals of BUGA 2031. If implemented, the new Regional Express line and expanded S7 services could significantly reduce travel times and increase capacity. The VRR continues to push for funding and approvals to turn these plans into reality.
