New book captures Douglas’s journey from port town to cultural capital

A new illustrated book, 'Douglas Past and Present, Volume I', has been released by Loaghtan Books, exploring the evolution of Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man. Retailing at £16.95, it's available at bookshops across the island. The book, edited by James Charles Roy, delves into Douglas's transformation from a bustling port and seat of government to a financial and cultural hub. It pairs historic photographs by Ray Stanfield with modern images by George Hobbs, accompanied by captions written by Sara Goodwins. The contrasting photographs and detailed commentaries highlight both the changes and enduring traditions of Douglas. Some landmarks have evolved over time, with boarding houses converted into apartments and ballrooms replaced by nightclubs. Yet, traditions like the horse trams and the Gaiety Theatre continue to define Douglas's character. The book is the first of two volumes, with 'Douglas Past & Present, Volume II' set to follow in early summer 2026. Douglas Past and Present, Volume I offers a fascinating journey through time, capturing the resilience and evolution of the island's leading resort and entertainment capital. It's a must-read for locals and visitors alike, providing a unique perspective on Douglas's past, present, and future.
