Nerchau urban development: proposed aid plan by Grimma for town revitalization
Urban Development Funding Grants for Nerchau, Grimma
The City of Grimma in Germany has announced plans for a significant urban development project in the district of Nerchau. The project, which aims to improve the quality of life and further develop Nerchau as a vibrant, future-oriented district, is set to receive funding from the urban development funding program in Saxony.
The application, scheduled for submission in December 2025, focuses on addressing urban planning shortcomings and functional losses within the defined area. Key measures include the revitalization of the historic town center, upgrading public spaces and green areas, enhancing pedestrian and cycling paths, and renovating residential buildings to improve energy efficiency.
To gather ideas and suggestions from residents and others connected to Nerchau, the City of Grimma's Department of Urban Development has launched an initial citizen survey. The survey, which is open until 17th August 2025, can be accessed online via the participation portal of the Free State of Saxony. It is directed at all residents of Nerchau, as well as people who have a close connection to the district - for example, through work, family ties, or the use of educational and care facilities.
The survey covers various topics such as greening, local design, tourist impulses, and more life in the public space. Central public places such as the Gänsemarkt, Saumarkt, Nerchauer Hauptstraße, and Bahnhofspark are being considered for significant aesthetic and functional upgrades. Additionally, several individual projects are in focus during the creation of a prioritization catalog, including the possible revival of the former cultural house, the future situation of the fire station and gymnasium, and measures to improve the quality of stay.
Private renovations in Nerchau may also be supported as part of the urban development project. Homeowners planning renovations within the next ten years can receive grant funds of up to 25 percent for eligible renovations. The goal of the application is to create a community that is not only well-planned but also reflects the needs and aspirations of its residents.
Mayor Tino Kießig emphasizes that the people in the area will be involved from the start in shaping the future of Nerchau. To this end, an initial citizen information event is planned for early September in Nerchau, where initial ideas will be presented and outlined.
