Berlin Animal Shelter Reaches 1,462 Animal Intake Mark
The Berlin Animal Shelter has welcomed 1,462 animals since the start of the year. According to a shelter spokesperson, some of these animals have already found new homes, while others have been waiting for years.
As of May 22, the shelter is currently housing 226 dogs and 368 cats. In total, 1,170 animals currently reside at the facility. The majority of dogs are surrendered due to aggression, overwhelming behavior, or bite incidents, while cats are often given up due to litterbox problems or allergies. Among small animals and birds, some former owners have lost interest or neglected their pets' needs.
The shelter encourages the public to visit during the Open Door Day today from 11 am to 5 pm. The event includes tours of the grounds, dog shows, entertainment programs, and presentations of some shelter dogs. However, consultations and adoptions will not take place. In the past 30 days, 22 dogs have been adopted, with one having been at the shelter for seven years. A total of 93 cats, 22 reptiles, 22 rabbits, and other rodents have also found new homes.
Parrots, on average, tend to wait the longest for new homes. While specific details about the Berlin Animal Shelter's parrots were not provided, it is generally recognized that parrots require special diets, enrichment, and social interaction, along with responsible owners to meet their unique needs. This can sometimes make finding suitable adoptive homes more challenging.
The shelter strives to accommodate these animals carefully before allowing them to be adopted, understanding the importance of love, warmth, and connection for species like parrots that thrive on social bonds and specialized care. Certain parrots, like Lucy and Coco, have been waiting at the shelter since 2020, along with Japanese quail Scott and racing pigeon Chilli-Cheese.
