  • What alternatives do you propose?
  • What would be an acceptable solution for you?

By doing this, the conversation partner is forced to address the topic concretely, feeling heard in return.

5. Stay On Course

If the conversation wavers or escalates emotionally, it's crucial to regain control, according to Imke Leith. A method of the expert: Address the other person by name and ask a targeted question to get back on track. For example: Mr. Meyer, what does this mean for our circumstances?

"When someone hears their name, they listen - in both ways," says Leith. "They listen and stop talking - briefly." This strategy forces the other person to refocus on the essentials.

If emotions run rampant or the conversation halts, take a moment to regroup. Speak slowly, pause if you need to collect your thoughts. You can also propose a brief pause or, as Imke Leith suggests, reschedule the conversation if necessary. For example, using the words: "I have the feeling that we aren't making progress right now. Let's think calmly and discuss the matter tomorrow."
