13 Bat Species in Munich - Despite Construction Boom - Munich's Rare Bats Find Refuge in New Urban Parks and Conservation Efforts

Munich's urban landscape is proving to be a surprising haven for bats, including some of Bavaria's rarest species. Recent surveys have uncovered the presence of the highly endangered lesser noctule in the city's Au district. With new conservation efforts underway, the city is now home to 13 bat species, despite ongoing development pressures.

Two new bat-friendly parks have opened in Munich's Au and Johanneskirchen districts. These green spaces now host nine different bat species, including the Kleinabendsegler, another heavily endangered species in Bavaria. The Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz (LBV) has backed these conservation projects, aiming to protect and promote bat populations in the city.

Wildflower meadows filled with night-blooming plants have been planted to attract insects, a vital food source for bats. Bat boxes and informational signs have also been installed across parks and other suitable locations, offering shelter and raising public awareness.

Beyond habitat improvements, volunteer-run rescue stations have played a key role in bat conservation. In 2022 alone, over 400 injured or orphaned bats were rehabilitated, with most successfully released back into the wild. Mapping efforts have further strengthened protection, uncovering ten previously unknown bat roosts during the first summer survey.

The discovery of rare bat species in Munich highlights the success of targeted conservation measures. With protected roosts, dedicated rescue efforts, and specially designed parks, the city is providing a lifeline for these nocturnal creatures. Ongoing monitoring and public engagement will remain crucial in safeguarding their future.
