Munich's Bayerischer Hof Reveals a Stunning Lobby Redesign by Axel Vervoordt
The Bayerischer Hof in Munich has unveiled its newly redesigned lobby after a six-month renovation. Renowned interior designer Axel Vervoordt led the project, transforming the space while preserving its historic charm. The updated area now serves as a central element, shaping the hotel's overall atmosphere for guests.
Work on the lobby began in June 2022 and concluded in December. Vervoordt's team focused on blending modern elegance with the building's heritage. The original red Hungarian natural stone floor and Italian columns were carefully restored and highlighted as key features.
The redesign removed the old balustrade, replacing it with sleek, non-load-bearing walls. This change revived the hotel's post-WWII reconstruction architecture, creating a more open and fluid layout. A coffered ceiling was added to enhance the Italian-inspired ambiance, lending warmth and intimacy to the space.
Art plays a subtle yet striking role in the new lobby. Following Vervoordt's signature approach, the selection remains understated but impactful. The centrepiece, a work by Korean artist Chung Chang-Sup, anchors the design, complementing the refined surroundings.
Vervoordt aimed to unify the hotel's varied areas—from historic rooms to restaurants and bars—into a cohesive whole. The lobby now acts as a seamless transition point, setting the tone for the entire guest experience.
The renovated lobby at the Bayerischer Hof is now open to visitors. Its blend of preserved heritage and contemporary design reflects Vervoordt's vision of harmony and sophistication. The space stands as both a welcoming entrance and a defining feature of the hotel's identity.
