Tyrolean Christmas tree adorns Munich's Marienplatz - Munich’s 25-Meter Christmas Tree Lights Up Marienplatz for the Holidays
Munich's Marienplatz is now adorned with a towering christmas tree, signaling the start of the festive season. The 25-meter-tall spruce, donated by Ellmau in Tyrol, Austria, will remain illuminated until January 6. It is the 49th year that a community has gifted Munich a christmas tree for the holidays.
The tree lighting ceremony took place on November 24, echoing the Oktoberfest keg-tapping tradition. The christmas tree, weighing 3.5 tons, is a symbol of the christmas market, Munich's traditional christmas market. After its role as a christmas tree, it may find a new purpose as a maypole.
Since 1977, communities from Bavaria and the Alpine regions have donated christmas trees to Munich. This year's christmas tree is no exception, with Ellmau showcasing its town at the christmas market, which features 138 stalls this year.
The christmas tree on Marienplatz will continue to brighten Munich's skyline until January 6. After its holiday duty, the christmas tree may serve as a maypole, giving it a second life. This annual tradition of donating christmas trees is a cherished part of Munich's christmas celebrations.
