Mixed Emotions Prevail in Weiden's Pedestrian Zone's Jubilee Market
Revamped: Weiden's Anniversary Market Braves Winter
Stepping into the quaint town of Weiden in the Upper Palatinate, the picturesque streets between the Lower Market and Macerata Square sparked interest at Sunday's anniversary market. Shops opened their doors at 1:00 PM, and the bleak weather certainly didn't promise a spring atmosphere.
Helmut Kunz Tobias Sonna, the retail spokesman, had a humorous take on the day. "Everyone got away with a black eye today," he chuckled. "This morning, we weren't exactly optimistic. But once the snow stopped, people flooded into the city center. Families and those who simply took advantage of the day."
The anniversary market was a double-edged sword this year. The shops earned from the dismal weather, while market vendors feared potential sales losses of up to 50%. "It's unfortunate. Sometimes we have more, sometimes less. But hopefully, everyone will escape unscathed," said Sonna.
The city marketing association worked tirelessly to create a vibrant program. Andrea Schild-Janker, the business manager, even cleared snow from the catwalk in anticipation of the evening's fashion show. "It was romantic," she mused. "Merry Christmas," they exchanged in the less-than-ideal start. But just in time for the program to commence, the snow stopped. "It's bloody cold. Dry would be enough for me. But what can you do?"
Kicking Off the Celebration
The dance troupe "Dance Unlimited" energized the catwalk with their choreography at 2:00 PM. The mayor, Reinhold Wildenauer, then officially opened the Sunday shopping, urging visitors to generously support the Weiden trade. Fashion staples like Frau Brautkleid, Frau Alex, Witt Weiden, Betty Barclay, and Brillen Stober showcased their casual streetwear and wedding dresses on the catwalk, with local councilors in attendance. The lively event was hosted by Markus Pleyer, and a captivating performance by Tamara Raphaela Hirschmann paid tribute to the market's "Weiden meets Las Vegas" theme, belting out Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra tunes. Dance school Vezard also contributed an animated interlude.
As last year, the shopping mile stretched from Josef-Witt-Platz to the Lower Gate, and stores in the southern part of Weiden were also open. Passersby couldn't escape the cold, with temperatures barely reaching six degrees. One visitor, however, opted for a cozy cup of coffee at home. "It's not that cold," said Rüdiger Reiter, a merchant selling socks and stockings, still hopeful for customers.
Warming Up the Sales
While the big shopping frenzy in outdoor areas seemed absent, Klaus Neumeier, the CEO of Woerhl, had a different perspective. "It's freezing outside, so I pitied my colleagues with outside stands. I brought them coffee to warm up earlier this morning. Now the streets are clear." In the store, there was a good flow, as it turns out that the wretched weather kept some people away from Weiden. "Still, we're satisfied with the turnout."
People were out and about, spending more time in stores on this shopping Sunday. Perhaps not quite as many as usual, but those who did visit seemed to be focused on shopping, specifically in the wedding and suit sections. Transitional clothing was not in high demand, but the weather didn't seem to dampen the spirits of those who braved the cold.
