Michael in Munich's Bathmaster Discusses Job's High Points and Low Points
Munich's Pool Lifeguard Eric Henschel: A Day in the Life
Eric Henschel, a 27-year-old Munich native, has spent much of his life around the city's SWM pools. He grew up swimming and prefers pools over the sea, feeling more comfortable in the tile-covered bottom. He's now a lifeguard at Munich's largest leisure pool, the Michaelibad in Neuperlach.
Henschel completed his specialized pool operations training in 2024 and handles a range of responsibilities at the facility, from Administration and the upkeep of the sauna, to giving swimming lessons and serving as the deputy shift leader. Despite the diverse set of tasks, Henschel enjoys the job – a discovery he made after trying various other careers. Even in his spare time, he offers swimming instruction, making his post-work schedule revolve around the swimming pool.
At the Michaelibad, nearly 30 to 40 regulars visit the pool daily. While it's quiet on this cloudy late morning, businesspeople occasionally drop in for a quick dip before work. Eric takes a concerned look at the sky as thunder can be heard in the distance. When thunder strikes, the pools are closed, requiring lifeguards to ask guests to leave the premises.
When asked if adults or children pose more challenges, Henschel laughs and says children are often more reasonable. Adults tend to argue more, especially parents, but he acknowledges that his easy-going attitude may contribute to his preference for working with children. Problematic teenagers are sometimes given a day ban, with improved behavior seen upon their return.
The Michaelibad, with its large number of visitors and diverse population, has had incidents of violence in the past, but Henschel notes that the facility's reputation is worse than its reality. He appreciates the pool's diverse visitors, underscoring the beauty of the facility's multicultural scene.
The nearby construction of a geothermal plant excites Henschel, as he muses about the possibility of heated pools being built over it. Regardless, he takes pride in a day filled with new experiences, knowing that his job keeps him on his toes. As the outdoor pool season begins, he and his team are ready to roll up their sleeves and ensure the safety and enjoyment of all Michaelibad guests.
Eric Henschel integrates his lifestyle and profession as he spends his leisure time teaching swimming, even outside his lifeguard duties at Munich's Michaelibad. On the flip side, his sports interest extends beyond just swimming, with him expressing enthusiasm for the prospect of home-and-garden projects like heated pools being built over the new geothermal plant nearby.
