Mediterranean Boat Trips Surge as Athens Tops 2026 Travel Rankings
Sun-drenched boat trips across the Mediterranean are set to dominate travel plans in 2026. New data reveals a surge in demand for destinations offering direct water access and well-developed tourism. From iconic islands to hidden coastal gems, holidaymakers are increasingly choosing open-water escapes over crowded beaches.
The latest rankings highlight a mix of famous ports and emerging spots, with charter bookings and short-term rentals climbing steadily.
Athens has claimed the top spot for boat vacations in 2026, scoring 74.50 out of 100. The Greek capital's blend of historic charm and marina access appeals to travellers seeking multistop itineraries. Naples follows in second place with a score of 58.82, while Santorini secures third at 55.05, boosted by strong online interest.
Mykonos and Capri also feature in the top five, with scores of 36.04 and 28.40 respectively. Capri's popularity is reflected in a 22% year-on-year increase in Google searches. Meanwhile, Sakarun Beach has seen an even sharper rise, with searches jumping by 181% compared to 2024. The rankings span four Mediterranean countries, with Greece (Crete, Corfu), Spain (Mallorca), Italy (Sardinia, Lake Como), and Turkey (Istanbul, Antalya) all represented. Alongside these established names, lesser-known coastal spots are gaining traction. Kassiopi and Agios Gordios on Corfu, Port de Sóller in Mallorca, and Ciutadella on Menorca have all recorded growing interest over the past two years. Travellers now favour multistop routes and destinations with reliable infrastructure. The shift away from packed beaches toward open-water experiences is reshaping booking trends for the coming year.
The 2026 rankings confirm the Mediterranean's dominance in boat travel, with both iconic and up-and-coming destinations in demand. Charter bookings and short-term rentals continue to expand, reflecting a broader preference for flexible, water-based holidays. As interest spreads beyond traditional hotspots, coastal towns and hidden coves are set to benefit from the rising trend.
