MaxiPark introduces MaxiGarden expansion

In an exciting development for the city of Hamm, the MaxiGarden project has received significant funding approval as part of the federal program "Adaptation of Cities and Rural Areas to Climate Change." The project, which is expected to be a significant part of the IGA 2027 in Hamm, aims to create a climate-resilient garden and landscape design.

The funding for the project, named "IGA-Projekt, Maximilianpark und Gartenkompetenzzentrum," was granted to six municipal IGA-level projects, including this one. The funding totals approximately 21.6 million euros, with contributions from the federal government, state, and EU, making up more than 52 million euros in total subsidies for the UNSERE GÄRTEN projects. The exact share of the federal government in the planned costs is not explicitly stated in the available information.

Andreas Mentz, City Building Director of the City of Hamm, expressed enthusiasm about the funding approval, expecting it to inspire visitors to redesign their green spaces for climate resilience. Michael Thews, MP for Hamm - Unna II, expressed satisfaction with the 5.5 million euros in federal funds for the garden competence center in the Maxipark, combining biodiversity, climate adaptation, and environmental protection.

The MaxiGarden project will focus on drought-tolerant plants, rainwater storage, and microclimate adaptation to global warming. Visitors will be able to acquire in-depth specialist knowledge in workshops and seminars on climate resilience.

The expansion will include a Maxiplaza, MaxiGarden, and an educational building. The Maxiplaza will be created in front of the workshop hall in a first step, followed by the eastern expansion of the Maxipark with the MaxiGarden. The training building, though not part of the funding, will also be constructed.

A kitchen in the training building will be an integral part of environmental education, focusing on meals made from fruit and vegetables grown and harvested in the MaxiGarden.

Further information about the MaxiGarden project can be found in the service portal. Mrs. Mann, from Project Development and Properties / SEG Hamm, can be contacted at the email address provided for further information.

Nina Frense, CEO of IGA Metropole Ruhr 2027 GmbH, considers the Maxipark's transformation into a MaxiGarden as a center of competence with an international claim, focusing on future-oriented park design and biodiversity. The Maximilianpark, which receives over 450,000 visitors per year and has a catchment area covering the Ruhr region, Münsterland, East and South Westphalia, is set to become a hub for climate-resilient gardening and education.

In a final note, Federal Minister of Housing Verena Hubertz has approved a multi-million euro grant for the eastern expansion of the Maxipark, with the federal government covering 75% of the planned costs of 7.44 million euros for the project. The MaxiGarden project is part of the federal program "Adaptation of Urban and Rural Areas to Climate Change" and is one of 53 projects nationwide for climate adaptation.
