Maui’s Lokelani Rose Blooms as a Symbol of Resilience and Beauty

The Lokelani rose has long been a beloved symbol of Maui, known for its delicate beauty and hardy nature. Over time, different varieties have carried the name, but each has thrived in Hawaii’s tropical conditions. Today, the Chinese rose—officially named the new Lokelani—stands as Maui’s official flower.

The original Lokelani was a small, pink, and fragrant rose called Rosa x damascena. It became a favourite in Maui gardens in the early 1900s. The name Lokelani, meaning 'rose of heaven' in Hawaiian, has since been used for several rose species.

The current Lokelani, Rosa chinensis 'Luis Filipe', gained popularity for its resilience. Unlike many roses, it resists tropical pests and diseases while thriving in Hawaii’s warm climate. This variety can grow up to ten feet tall and produces small red blossoms almost year-round. Lokelani is one of the easiest roses to cultivate in Hawaii. It responds well to regular pruning and feeding, and its petals are even edible. Gardeners can propagate it from cuttings, making it simpler to grow than from seed.

The Chinese rose now holds the title of the official Lokelani, representing Maui’s floral heritage. Its ability to flourish in Hawaii’s conditions ensures its place in gardens across the islands. The name Lokelani continues to honour both its heavenly beauty and deep local roots.
