Mannheim’s Lena-Maurer-Platz to transform into a cooler, greener urban oasis by 2026

Lena-Maurer-Platz in Mannheim is set to become greener and cooler by 2026. The city has allocated €90,000 to transform parts of the square by removing paved surfaces and planting trees. The project follows a proposal from local resident Lena Rieckhof and the Schönau district council to improve the area’s environment.

Work on the square will begin in December, with ten new tree locations being prepared. These trees will offer shade and help lower temperatures during hot summer months. Their leaves will release moisture, further cooling the air around the square.

The project also includes depaving sections of the square. This process removes impermeable surfaces, allowing rainwater to soak into the ground instead of running off. In the newly cleared areas, ecologically valuable wildflower meadows will be planted. These meadows will support local biodiversity while also contributing to the cooling effect.

Mannheim’s municipal services department expects to finish all planting and landscaping by March 2026. The changes aim to make the square more pleasant for visitors and better adapted to climate challenges.

Once completed, the upgraded Lena-Maurer-Platz will feature more trees, meadows, and improved water absorption. The investment of €90,000 will create a cooler, greener space for the community. The project reflects ongoing efforts to adapt urban areas to rising temperatures and heavier rainfall.
