Management of ports, a crucial element of maritime transportation and trade.

Neustadt in Holstein's harbor, with its rich history and strategic importance, has been a link to the world since the city's founding in 1244. This Baltic Sea port has played a significant role in shaping the city's development, particularly through grain trade and fishing.

The harbor maintains an authentic working harbor atmosphere, a testament to its continued active use rather than transformation into a large commercial or industrial port. This charming, functional harbor is characterized by structures supporting fishing activity and local trade.

Neustadt's harbor area has been a witness to significant events, notably during World War II. The sinking of ships nearby, such as the prisoner ship Thielbek in May 1945, underscores the harbor's proximity to crucial wartime maritime activities and consequences of naval warfare in the Baltic Sea.

Architecturally, the harbor retains its original charm, with few monumental harbor architecture features. Instead, it boasts functional buildings for fish processing, storage, and maritime services, reflecting the practical needs of a small fishing and local trade harbor. One of the architectural highlights is the Pagoda granary from 1830, equipped with a protective device to prevent decay.

For those interested in exploring this historic harbor, a guided tour is scheduled for July 8th at 11 am. Children and youth up to 18 years can participate for free. The tour starts at Kugelbrunnen on the west side of the harbor, near the harbor bridge.

Despite its modest importance, Neustadt's harbor was a hub for local trade and a significant economic factor. In the 17th century, some of the largest Danish warships were even built here. However, the harbor's primary significance lies in its role as a local economic center, contributing to the town’s livelihood and regional maritime activity.
