Mainz turns illegal parking into vibrant green spaces by 2026

A stretch of illegal parking at Fichteplatz in Mainz’s Oberstadt district will soon become green space. The local group Mainzer Grünflächen-Initiative announced plans to transform 500 square metres of unauthorised parking into new public gardens. The project aims to boost biodiversity and improve the neighbourhood’s appearance.

On 17 December 2025, the citizen-led initiative held a press conference at Fichteplatz to outline the changes. The city has already adjusted nearby parking layouts to reclaim areas currently used for illegal news on green strips.

The transformation will remove illegal parking spots and replace them with planted areas. Local involvement ensures the design reflects what residents want. Once complete, the new green spaces will offer a fresher, more natural setting for the Oberstadt district.
