The Lübeck Christmas Market is open - Lübeck’s iconic Christmas market lights up with a Finnish gift tree

Lübeck’s famous Christmas market has officially opened, marking the start of the city’s festive season. The event began with a lantern-lit procession to the Holstentor gate, where the lights of the towering Christmas tree were switched on for the first time this year.

The centrepiece of the celebrations is the 'Kotka fir', a grand tree gifted by Lübeck’s Finnish twin city of Kotka. This tradition has been in place since 1969, with the tree decorated in oversized baubles that locals can personalise with holiday messages. The tree stands proudly in front of the Holstentor, a historic landmark that serves as the focal point of the festivities.

The markets will run until the end of December, drawing visitors from across the region. With its mix of historic charm, modern energy-saving measures, and community traditions, Lübeck’s Christmas celebrations continue to be a highlight of the winter season.
