Lowe's Launches SmartSpot: A Hands-On Hub for Smart Home Tech

Lowe's has expanded its smart home offerings with a new store-within-a-store concept called SmartSpot. Powered by retail specialist b8ta, these dedicated sections now appear in select California locations. The move aims to make high-tech home products more accessible to shoppers by bringing multiple brands together in one place.

The SmartSpot concept launched a year after Lowe's introduced its Iris smart home system. Unlike traditional retail displays, these areas feature over 40 products from various companies, including Amazon, Lutron, Nest, and Ring. Lowe's own Iris energy management devices also sit alongside third-party options, covering security, energy efficiency, and convenience solutions.

The design comes from b8ta, a San Francisco firm known for creating interactive retail spaces. Their approach reduces the intimidation often felt with complex technology, encouraging customers to test and explore products firsthand. Lowe's has rolled out SmartSpot in three California stores: Livermore, Burbank, and Aliso Viejo.

This strategy sets Lowe's apart from competitors. While Best Buy has partnered with brands like Samsung and Google for similar in-store sections, Lowe's focuses on a multi-brand experience rather than single-partner promotions. Other retailers, such as Staples, have experimented with tech-focused areas, but their 'Best Tech' stores remain limited to a handful of locations in New England and the Northeast.

SmartSpot now provides a central hub for smart home shoppers in select Lowe's stores. The collaboration with b8ta ensures an engaging, hands-on experience with a wide range of products. For now, the concept remains exclusive to three California locations, with no immediate plans for wider expansion announced.
