Living on former bunker area: ABG builds 42 subsidized housing units

Construction has started on a new affordable housing project in Frankfurt’s Gallus district. The development, led by ABG Frankfurt Holding, will provide 42 publicly subsidised apartments. Designed to meet passive house standards, it aims to address the area’s urgent need for low-cost homes while prioritising sustainability.

The site at 10 Herxheimerstraße was once occupied by a World War II-era bunker. Now, it will host a four-storey residential building, with the first tenants expected to move in by late 2027. The project, backed by over €16 million in joint funding from the city of Frankfurt and the state of Hesse, will offer exclusively subsidised housing.

The design comes from **gmp Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner**, working alongside local firms. Their plans preserve existing trees and blend the new structure into the surrounding neighbourhood. Ecological sustainability remains a key focus, with the building meeting strict passive house energy standards.

The development will add much-needed affordable housing to Gallus while maintaining green spaces. With completion set for 2027, the project reflects Frankfurt’s commitment to sustainable urban living. All 42 apartments will remain under public subsidy.
