Lisbon's Giant Tired Panda Sculpture Turns Trash Into Art

A giant panda sculpture made from over a hundred old tyres now stands in a roundabout in Lisbon's Marvila district. Named Tired Panda, the ten-metre-tall artwork was created by Portuguese artist Bordalo II to highlight sustainability and environmental concerns.

The sculpture first appeared in 2022 as part of the Evilution exhibition at Lisbon's Edu Hub. Alongside other recycled-material artworks, it drew attention for its striking design and eco-friendly message. The piece was later donated by the nonprofit Valorpneu, which promotes tyre recycling.

Bordalo II is known for using waste materials to address environmental and social issues. His work often critiques consumerism, real estate speculation, and pollution. The Tired Panda now has a permanent home in Bela Vista Park, where it continues to spark conversations about sustainability.

No details have been released about public reaction to the sculpture since its move from the exhibition to its current location.

The Tired Panda remains a visible symbol of recycling and environmental awareness in Lisbon. Its placement in a busy roundabout ensures it reaches a wide audience daily. The artwork's long-term impact on local attitudes toward sustainability is yet to be seen.
