Harris County Public Library Introduces Instant Digital Access to Digital Content

Harris County Public Library (HCPL) has made it easier than ever for residents to access digital content, including ebooks, audiobooks, streaming video, digital magazines, and research tools, without the need for a physical library card.

Through HCPL's OverDrive Instant Digital Card, users can obtain an instant, online digital card account that grants them access to the library's extensive digital collection. This card can be obtained immediately through OverDrive’s platform, allowing users to borrow digital content from the library's collection directly via the Libby or OverDrive apps, or in a browser, without visiting a library branch for a physical card.

The Instant Digital Card functions as a virtual library card tied to the user's email, simplifying access for those who may not have a physical card by removing the need for in-person verification or card issuance. Users can simply sign up online, receive their digital credentials instantly, and start borrowing digital content immediately.

HCPL's digital collection is accessible via mobile devices, making it convenient for users to download ebooks and audiobooks on-the-go. The library is also promoting the convenience of this digital service to demonstrate its ease of use and to convert print book partisans to ebook users.

In addition to ebooks and audiobooks, the Overdrive Instant Digital Card provides access to a vast array of research tools and databases like Medline Plus, Morningstar, and LearningExpress Library. Users can also access digital magazines on Flipster.

HCPL became the first library in Texas to circulate one million ebooks in a calendar year in 2016, and the Instant Digital Card allows new users to join this growing community of digital readers. To obtain the Overdrive Instant Digital Card, users who do not have a valid library card can enter their mobile phone number, and the library's digital collection can be accessed online as well as through grassroots promotion.

In summary, HCPL's OverDrive Instant Digital Card offers a simple and convenient way for residents to access the library's digital collection, making it easier than ever for more people to enjoy the benefits of digital content.
