Lessons Gained from My Initial Experience at a Writers Conference (RWA)
Katie McCoach, a member of both the Romance Writers of America and the Editorial Freelancers Association, recently attended the annual conference in San Antonio, TX. In this article, she shares her insights and experiences.
McCoach, who is currently writing a contemporary romance novel, went to the conference with a specific goal in mind: to learn about the writing craft, publishing options, marketing, and the conference experience itself.
The conference, filled with workshops, panels, and networking opportunities, proved to be a valuable learning experience for McCoach. She emphasizes the importance of conflict in a story, stating that it is the driving force of a character and story. GMC (Goal, Motivation, Conflict) is the key to creating engaging and compelling narratives.
McCoach also encourages taking notes and applying what is learned to a work in progress (WIP). She believes that attending the conference made her a better writer and editor.
Networking was another highlight of the conference for McCoach. Talking with other writers who share similar passions was enlightening and inspiring. She met various people, even in unexpected places like the bathroom, and encourages being kind and offering advice when appropriate.
In terms of practical advice, McCoach suggests bringing an extra suitcase as books will likely be acquired. She also advises wearing eye-catching shoes, as they can start conversations. For those planning to pitch their book, she provides tips on crafting the perfect pitch, which should include the hook, plot, and conflict.
When it comes to editing, writing, and publishing advice, McCoach directs readers to her blog. She has had essays published in TrainWrite and Kalliope.
McCoach also shares some tips for writing hot sex scenes. She advises not to write as if your mother is standing over your shoulder and emphasizes that the hero and heroine's relationship must change after any/every sex scene.
Finally, McCoach stresses that what you get out of a writing conference is dependent on what you put into it. She encourages writers to approach the conference with a clear goal and a willingness to learn.
