A giant watermelon weighing 46.08 kg has been grown in Iecava, Latvia—possibly the largest ever recorded in the country. Despite a cool and rainy summer, Māris Limbergs and Lāsma Kadiķe successfully harvested the massive fruit in late September after planting it in April.

The couple began the project by planting seeds indoors in spring. Some seeds went into a greenhouse, while others were sown outside. The chosen variety, 'Carolina Cross', is known for producing large fruit, though the world record stands at around 160 kg.

The 46.08 kg watermelon marks a notable achievement for Latvian agriculture. The growers’ success, despite challenging conditions, shows the potential for expanding watermelon cultivation in the region. Their future experiments may push the limits of what can be grown locally.
