La Cala's Waiters' Race dazzles with speed, spills and charity spirit
Hundreds gathered in La Cala de Mijas on March 28 for the second annual Waiters' Race. Organised by the La Cala Lions Club, the event combined competition with fundraising for local charities. The lively atmosphere included market stalls, children's activities, and live music from the batukada group Barakatun of Espacio Drang. Nine contestants took part in the tray-balancing challenge, navigating a course at speed without running. The goal was to avoid spills while racing to the finish line. Rafael Leducq claimed first place in his debut appearance, while Brandon Pointer secured third and earned the title of top individual fundraiser with €1,470 raised.
Mario Bravo, Mijas councillor for the Foreigners' Department, joined the event and commended the participants for their balance and precision. The race drew a large crowd, with attendees enjoying workshops, shopping at the market, and listening to drumming performances. Thousands of euros were collected through contestant efforts and sponsor contributions, all directed toward the Lions Club's community projects. The Mijas council later announced a third edition of the race, expected to take place on the final weekend of March next year.
The event left visitors smiling, reinforcing its role in bringing people together through fun and generosity. Funds raised will support the La Cala Lions Club's ongoing charitable work across local communities. Organisers and participants alike are already looking ahead to next year's competition.
