Kuwait Lifts 25-Year Mullet Fishing Ban in Kuwait Bay

Kuwait has lifted a decades-long ban on mullet fishing in Kuwait Bay, with Decision No. 1860 of 2025 authorizing a limited seasonal catch. The move, directed by the Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy and Acting Minister of Finance, aims to boost local supply and ease prices.

The decision allows 50 temporary permits, with fishing restricted to live mullet using approved mid-range nets. The total catch is capped at 400 tons per season. Fishermen's Union head Abdullah Al-Sarheed hailed the move as a 'breakthrough', ending years of deprivation and meeting strong public demand for mullet. Fishing operations will be closely supervised by the Marine Control Department to ensure environmental standards are met and marine biodiversity protected. This is the first time mullet fishing has been permitted in Kuwait Bay since November 2000. The measure is being implemented on a trial basis at specific locations, in coordination with relevant authorities.

The Kuwaiti government expects the move to stimulate the local fish market and improve consumer access to mullet. The decision, made under the directives of the Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy and Acting Minister of Finance, is a step towards meeting public demand while ensuring sustainable fishing practices.
