Kremlin’s 2025 New Year tree stands tall as Moscow’s festive centerpiece

Russia’s main New Year news for the Kremlin in 2025 has been chosen and will soon take centre stage. Standing at an impressive 33 metres tall, the spruce was sourced from the Moscow region and weighs around 10 tons. Its official lighting ceremony is set for December 20, 2025, marking the start of the festive season in the capital.

The selected tree is a century-old spruce with a trunk diameter of 90 centimetres and a symmetrical crown. Its lower branches stretch 11 metres wide, giving it a full, balanced appearance. Mukhtar Magomedov, the senior forester who discovered the tree, received a new car as a reward for his find.

Decorations will include garlands, hand-painted ornaments, flags, and streamers, topped with a star. The full setup is expected to be finished by December 25, 2025. Meanwhile, St. Petersburg’s main Christmas news was delivered to Palace Square on December 10, 2025, after being felled in the Koporsky forestry district of Leningrad Oblast the day before.

The name of the tree’s designer remains undisclosed, keeping some mystery around the Kremlin’s festive centrepiece.

The Kremlin’s 2025 New Year news will tower over Moscow’s celebrations, fully decorated and lit by late December. With its grand size and traditional adornments, it will serve as a focal point for holiday events in the city. The news’s installation follows a long-standing tradition of marking the season with a carefully chosen spruce.
