Koblenz Students Shape City's Future at Democracy Simulation Ahead of 2029 Horticultural Show
Over 35 students from Koblenz recently took part in Main Event 2029, a democracy simulation aimed at shaping the city's future. The event allowed young people to propose concrete measures for climate adaptation and urban planning ahead of the 2029 Federal Horticultural Show. Their ideas included expanding green spaces and installing public drinking fountains across the city.
The simulation was organised by the Buga 2029 task force of the City of Koblenz. Students from Görres Gymnasium and Diesterweg School worked together to develop practical solutions for their city. Among their proposals were sunscreen dispensers in shaded areas and more green spaces to combat rising temperatures.
Lord Mayor David Langner opened the event by highlighting the importance of climate adaptation. He also pointed to the opportunities created by the upcoming 2029 Federal Horticultural Show. During the simulation, participants tested MobiGa's mobile vertical gardens, which feature high-pressure misting systems for cooling.
The results of the project, including the students' ideas, voting outcomes, and a photo gallery, are available online at Eventbrite. Koblenz joins six other German cities—Dresden, Hamburg, Hannover, Obershausen (Hessen), Torgau (Sachsen), and Wittmund (Niedersachsen)—in running youth participation initiatives nominated for the Deutscher Kinder- und Jugendpreis 2026.
The event gave young residents a direct role in planning Koblenz's future. Their proposals will now be reviewed as part of the city's preparations for the 2029 Federal Horticultural Show. The project's outcomes are documented online for public access.
