Koblenz Honors Late Artist Lotte Meurer with a Named Square in Old Town
Koblenz is honouring local artist Lotte Meurer (1938-2004) by naming a square in the Old Town after her. The city council unanimously approved the move, with the only cost being the installation of a new street sign.
Meurer, a painter and ceramicist, was born in Koblenz-Neuendorf and spent much of her life capturing the city's architecture and people in her vibrant, pastel-like works. In 2003, she received the Old Town Prize from the Citizens’ and Traffic Association for her distinctive portrayal of Koblenz.
She opened her first studio in Jesuitengasse in 1970 and later moved to Firmungsstraße, where she spent 25 years before relocating to Gemüsegasse in 2002. The square, now called Lotte-Meurer-Platz, is located near Altenhof Street, separated by a wall and a flight of stairs, and does not access any buildings.
Meurer passed away in 2004, just weeks before her 66th birthday, following a serious illness. The naming of the square is a fitting tribute to her unique artistic legacy and her impact on Koblenz's cultural landscape.
