Klüt's Flood Protection Measures Pass First Major Test

Klüt, a city in Detmold, has successfully weathered a heavy rainfall event, with flood protection measures proving effective. The city plans further expansions to ensure safety.

On June 14th, the city experienced rainfall significantly above the once-in-a-century heavy rain level. Despite this, the fire department only had to respond to incidents in the north due to high-pressure groundwater or non-functioning backflow preventers in houses. The implemented measures, including upgraded emergency overflow canals and new ditch dam systems with retention basins, worked together to discharge rainwater without causing floods. These measures not only protected Klüt but also had a positive effect on the downstream Jerxen-Orbke. The mayor, Frank Hilker, attributed the successful outcome to these measures and the purchase of key properties for flood protection. The city plans to further expand these protective measures, with upgrades to the emergency overflow canal on Düner Straße and the construction of another ditch dam system with a retention basin on Poststraße towards Ernst-Hilker-Ring/Jowat.

Klüt's flood protection measures have passed their first real test, demonstrating their effectiveness in protecting the city and its surroundings. The city continues to plan and execute further measures to ensure the safety of its residents.
