Khabarovsk’s salmon boom hits five-year high—but prices stay stubbornly high

This year’s salmon season in the Khabarovsk region has seen the best catches in half a decade. By September 23, fishermen had landed over 33 tons, just shy of the 36-ton target. The haul includes more than 13 tons of pink salmon and nearly 19 tons of chum salmon—yet locals remain frustrated by soaring market prices.

The fishing season has been unusually productive. With over 32.5 tons already caught, authorities expect to meet the 36-ton goal before the season ends. This marks the highest yield in five years for the Khabarovsk region.

The season’s record catch has not translated into lower prices for consumers. Instead, regulatory costs and new industry rules continue to drive up expenses for both producers and buyers. With the fishing ban now in place, further changes to supply and pricing may follow in the coming weeks.
