Commencement ofconstruction on the novelstructure at the Karl May Museum. - Karl-May Museum's latest construction unveiled
Get ready for a fresh chapter in Karl-May-Museum Radebeul's story! A groundbreaking ceremony in June marked the starting point for the new reception building project. In a statement, Mayor Bert Wendsche highlighted the significance of this development for the treasured museum. The city of Radebeul, along with funding bodies, demonstrated their long-term dedication to preserving this cultural gem.
New Horizons Await May's Legacy and Exhibits
To kick off the €6.5 million venture, construction work begins on July 7! The new building will feature an exhibition space for special exhibitions and alleviate the space crunch at the current depot. With a planned construction time of about two years, the unveiling is scheduled for mid-2027. The federal and state governments each pledge around €2.7 million, while the city contributes €1 million to the project.
A Lifelong Writer's Residential Legacy
Born in Hohenstein-Ernstthal (Zwickau district) in 1842, Karl May made his home in Radebeul from 1888 until his passing in 1912. Both Radebeul and his birthplace commemorate his life and work with museums.
The "Villa Shatterhand" and the "Villa Bärenfett" constructed in 1926 form the museum, a testament to the initiative of Karl May's second wife, Klara (1864-1944). The museum first opened its doors in 1928, displaying around 800 pieces from its 4,000-piece collection.
