Isle of Man's Health Passport transforms care for vulnerable residents
Manx Care has introduced a new Health Passport for residents of the Isle of Man. The document aims to improve care for people with learning disabilities, neurodivergent individuals, and those requiring personalized support. It was developed after a 2025 report highlighted gaps in healthcare access for these groups.
The passport helps users share key health details, communication needs, and care preferences with medical staff. Available in printable and digital Word formats, it ensures quick access to vital information during appointments, hospital stays, or emergencies. Manx Care advises keeping a printed copy in a safe, easily reachable place.
The initiative was led by the safeguarding team for health, working alongside children's services. It includes an 'About Me' section and guidance notes to help users complete each part correctly. The passport supports both children and adults, ensuring dignity and consistency in care across different settings.
As of March 2026, no other health authority outside the Isle of Man has launched a similar scheme. The passport remains a unique tool, first introduced on the island in 2023.
The Health Passport provides a structured way for individuals with complex needs to communicate their requirements. It is now available for all island residents who may benefit from a more tailored approach to healthcare. The document aims to make medical interactions safer and more effective for those who need extra support.
