Idaho Tops the List as America's Best State for Camping in 2025

A new study has ranked Idaho as the best state in the US for camping. The research highlights its vast public lands, dense forests, and budget-friendly costs. Utah and Alaska also performed strongly, thanks to their wide-open spaces and national parks.

The findings come from RVezy, which analysed 16 factors across nature, affordability, and safety to determine the top spots for outdoor stays.

Idaho took the top position due to its mix of clear-weather days, low rainfall, and minimal crime. The state also boasts one of the highest percentages of public land in the country. These features make it an ideal choice for campers looking for both adventure and value.

Utah and Alaska followed closely behind. Alaska secured second place for its huge share of public land and the second-highest number of national parks. Utah ranked third, praised for its dramatic landscapes and well-maintained camping sites. Colorado, New Mexico, and Oregon also made the top ten, joined by Wyoming, Georgia, West Virginia, and Arizona.

At the other end of the list, Delaware came last. The study pointed to its lack of public land and limited outdoor appeal. Illinois, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Arkansas also scored poorly for similar reasons.

The research examined a range of details, from average nightly camping fees to seasonal price shifts. It also considered tourism demand near national parks, fuel costs, and local amenities. Data from 2023 to 2025, adjusted for inflation, helped shape the final rankings.

A full breakdown of scores and state positions is available in a public Google sheet. The study notes that the best camping spot ultimately depends on individual tastes, budgets, and the type of experience sought.

The rankings provide a clear guide for campers planning their next trip. Idaho leads for its balance of affordability, safety, and natural beauty. Meanwhile, states like Delaware offer fewer options due to limited public spaces and higher costs.

The full results allow travellers to compare locations based on their own needs, whether prioritising scenery, budget, or convenience.
