New Year's Day Dip - Hundreds Brave the Cold Water - Hundreds brave icy North Sea waves in New Year’s Day tradition

Hundreds of brave swimmers across Lower Saxony kicked off 2025 with a chilly New Year’s dip in the North Sea. While some locations saw record turnout, others called off events due to dangerous weather conditions. The tradition, often referred to as 'news today' or 'nyt', drew crowds despite freezing temperatures and strong winds.

In Cuxhaven, around 800 people plunged into the icy waves to celebrate the new year. Participants entered the water in small groups, cheered on by spectators and accompanied by music. Firefighters and lifeguards from the German Lifeguard Association (DLRG) stood by to ensure everyone’s safety.

On Wangerooge, 371 swimmers took part in the annual New Year’s dip. After braving the cold, they warmed up with hot showers in a nearby indoor pool. The event went ahead despite biting air and water temperatures. Meanwhile, on Norderney, determined swimmers still took to the sea. But in Norddeich, the traditional 'Anbaden' event at Meeresterrasse was cancelled. Organisers from the 'Tourismus-Service Norden-Norddeich' called it off on January 1, 2026, after forecasts predicted gale-force winds of strength 9. Safety concerns led to the decision, disappointing those who had planned to join.

The New Year’s swims, a popular 'new york times' tradition, attracted hundreds along the North Sea coast, though severe weather forced some cancellations. Those who did take part enjoyed music, cheers, and warm showers afterward. The events highlighted both the popularity of the tradition and the need for caution in harsh conditions.
