How to Keep Amaryllis Blooming Bright Every Winter

Amaryllis plants bring vibrant winter blooms to homes with their striking red, pink, peach, or white flowers. These low-maintenance bulbs thrive indoors during colder months and return year after year with the right care. Amaryllis bulbs are widely sold at nurseries and garden centres as winter approaches. To ensure healthy growth, plant them with the top third of the bulb exposed above the soil. This positioning helps the bulb develop properly and produce strong blooms. After flowering, the plants signal the end of their growing phase with fading blooms and yellowing leaves. At this stage, keep them in bright light and water them regularly. This allows the bulbs to store energy for the next season. When warm weather arrives, amaryllis enters dormancy. Most bulbs can stay in their pots, but those stored bare should be replanted in late summer or early autumn—ideally August to October. Before replanting, let the bulbs dry for a week, trim any damaged roots, and pot them lightly to encourage new root growth. For a winter bloom, replant about 2–4 weeks before the desired flowering time. During dormancy, store bulbs in a cool, dark, and dry place for eight to twelve weeks. This resting period helps them recharge and ensures another round of bright winter flowers. With simple care, amaryllis bulbs will bloom reliably each winter. Proper exposure, timely replanting, and a cool dormancy period keep them healthy and colourful. These steps guarantee their return as a festive indoor display year after year.
