How industrial waste is transforming into stylish, eco-friendly tiles
German manufacturer Ardex and Dutch tile giant Mosa are leading the way in sustainable tile production. They're turning industrial waste into eco-friendly tiles, reducing costs, and cutting CO2 emissions.
The process involves crushing waste into fine powders, mixing with binders, pressing into molds, and firing at lower temperatures. This not only reduces landfill burdens but also minimizes the need for raw materials. Ardex's CircuTec mortar technology enables tiles to be easily removed and recycled, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 70 percent.
Digital printing techniques can create intricate designs on these tiles, which have unique aesthetic qualities reflecting their origins. Companies like one in Italy using 100% recycled glass and another in Spain using ceramic waste are successful examples. Challenges include the variability in waste quality affecting product consistency, but they also present opportunities for innovation.
The demand for sustainable building materials is growing, driving innovation in the use of industrial waste. By choosing products made from recycled materials and supporting sustainable companies, individuals can support this trend and contribute to a greener future.
