How dishwasher tablets can transform your greasy stovetop—safely
Dishwasher tablets can do more than just clean dishes—they also work well on stovetops. The tablets contain enzymes and surfactants that cut through grease and grime. But not all surfaces are safe for this method, and some mistakes can cause damage.
For a greasy stovetop, crush a solid, powder-style tablet and mix it with warm water to form a paste. Apply this to gas, glass, ceramic, or metal surfaces, then let it sit before wiping with a damp sponge. A slightly warm stovetop helps loosen stubborn grease more easily.
The same method works for stovetop grates—soak them in a tablet solution, scrub, rinse, and dry. However, avoid using dishwasher tablets on aluminum or natural stone like granite or marble. The harsh alkaline chemicals and abrasives can etch or dull these sensitive surfaces. Common errors include scrubbing too hard, leaving residue, or soaking aluminum burner caps. Gel pods or tablets with extra rinse aid or strong dyes may also leave sticky streaks. For stone surfaces, use pH-neutral cleaners and a soft cloth instead.
Dishwasher tablets offer a simple way to degrease stovetops and grates when used correctly. They work best on approved surfaces with proper technique. For delicate materials like granite or marble, stick to specialised stone-safe products to prevent damage.
