How a Brooklyn Garden Broke Free from ‘Cookie-Cutter’ Landscaping
A Brooklyn homeowner wanted a fresh look for their garden after renovating their house. In the summer of 2022, they reached out to HGTV star John Gidding for a new design. The project later involved garden designer Christy Dailey, who brought the plan to life with a few adjustments.
The homeowner found the landscaping on their Midwood street uninspired. Dailey described the neighbourhood gardens as 'cookie-cutter', with identical lawns, hedges, and seasonal plants. They wanted something different.
John Gidding provided a design plan, though the original architect behind it remains unknown. Dailey took charge of the installation, making small changes along the way. Her key decision was to use mostly native plants, giving the garden a distinct and natural feel.
The garden now stands out from the rest of the street. Native plants replace the usual lawns and hedges, creating a unique look. The project reflects the homeowner’s wish for a more personal and sustainable outdoor space.
