How a 1920s Colonial Became a Multigenerational Dream Home

Deb Leavitt and David Gardiner bought a spacious Colonial house in South Minneapolis in 2023. The 2,169-square-foot property was dated but offered the perfect opportunity for a full remodel to suit their blended family—six children, five grandchildren, and seven grand-dogs. The couple worked with Vujovich Design Build to transform the home into a functional space for their large family. They added a one-story extension at the back, nearly doubling the main floor’s size. The new addition kept the original charm of the house while creating room for modern updates.

The kitchen was completely redesigned to feature a 12-foot island and an open, contemporary layout. A nostalgic yellow-and-blue pantry was also included, complete with a hidden entrance to the lower level. Personalised touches, like half doors in the mudroom and at the top of the lower-level stairs, were added after discussions with the builders. For long-term comfort, the couple incorporated ageing-in-place features, such as wide pathways, bathroom grab bars, and an easy-to-clean shower. They also planned a main-floor owners’ suite and laundry room, along with a broad staircase leading downstairs. Fun elements for the grandchildren were included to make the home welcoming for all generations.

The remodelled house now meets the needs of Leavitt and Gardiner’s blended family. The design balances practicality with playful details, ensuring the space works for both daily life and future visits. The project successfully blended old-world charm with modern convenience.
