Houston gears up for 2026 World Cup with seven high-stakes matches and a month-long festival
Houston is preparing to host a series of World Cup matches in 2026, with NRG Stadium set as a key venue. The city will offer expanded public transport and a dedicated Green Corridor to help fans move between the FIFA Fan Festival and the stadium. Seven matches, including group-stage games and knockout rounds, will take place between June 14 and July 4.
The FIFA Fan Festival will run for 39 days, providing a central hub for visitors. A large viewing area will screen live matches, while food stalls, live performances, and youth soccer activities will keep fans entertained. The festival is open to all, with no competitive events—just a space for celebration.
NRG Stadium will host high-profile fixtures, including Germany vs. Curacao, Portugal vs. Congo DR/Jamaica/New Caledonia, and the Netherlands vs. Albania/Poland/Sweden/Ukraine. Later rounds will feature Portugal vs. Uzbekistan, Cabo Verde vs. Saudi Arabia, and two knockout matches.
To ease travel, Houston's public transport will expand services during the tournament. An Airbnb-sponsored Green Corridor will directly link the festival site to the stadium, ensuring smooth access for spectators.
Beyond football, the city offers diverse attractions. Free activities include exploring Hermann Park, Buffalo Bayou Park, and the Willow Waterhole Greenway. Visitors can also take a self-guided tour of Black landmarks or enjoy the local food scene, known for BBQ, Tex-Mex, soul food, and vegan options. Brunch remains a standout feature.
For cultural experiences, Third Ward, the Houston Museum District, and the East End Houston Cultural District provide rich options. Nightlife includes speakeasies, while Pur Noire, a Black-owned winery, adds a unique touch. Recommended neighbourhoods for stays include the Museum District, West University/Rice Village, Montrose, Midtown, and Third Ward.
Houston's mix of expanded transport, cultural sites, and free activities aims to enhance the World Cup experience for visitors. With seven matches at NRG Stadium and a month-long festival, the city is positioning itself as a vibrant host. The event will run from June 14 to July 4, 2026.
