Home-compostable butter packaging from ProAmpac has earned TÜV certification.
In the realm of sustainable packaging, three companies are making significant strides: ProAmpac, Scanfill, and Sulapac.
ProAmpac's Global Innovation Manager for Sustainable Paper Packaging, Ray Recchia, has announced that they have earned the OK compost HOME certificate for their ButterFresh Parchment preservation packaging. This certification underscores ProAmpac's commitment to delivering packaging solutions that balance performance, process efficiency, and environmental responsibility. ButterFresh Parchment, a wax-free, PFAS non-intend printed wrapper, has received TÜV Austria's OK Compost Home certification for home compostability.
Meanwhile, Aldi has taken a step towards sustainability by transitioning two of its own-label butter lines into home-recycled, paper-based wrappers. This move is expected to eliminate over 10 tonnes of non-recyclable packaging each year.
Scanfill and Sulapac have unveiled a thermoforming foil made of a compostable wood composite. This 'drop-in' alternative to conventional plastic foils is not specified for use with any specific products but is designed for oil-based solid products like butter and margarine, offering grease resistance and dead-fold properties to reduce air exposure and keep the foods fresh. The companies aim to provide a sustainable alternative to plastic foils with this new product.
The carbon footprint reduction potential of the new thermoforming foil is significant compared to PET solutions. The high biobased content of the thermoforming foil is thought to lower a pack's carbon footprint significantly compared to solutions like PET. However, it's worth noting that the new thermoforming foil has not yet received any certifications.
ButterFresh Parchment, with its ability to maintain its performance properties and runability during the packing stage, while also being compostable at end-of-life, demonstrates ProAmpac's ability to deliver PFAS non-intent fibre-based technologies that meet the growing demand for home-compostable packaging.
The new thermoforming foil, like ButterFresh Parchment, is anticipated to contribute to the industry's shift towards more sustainable packaging solutions. These innovations are a testament to the companies' dedication to reducing environmental impact while maintaining product quality and efficiency.
