Holiday grease disposal made easy: Clearwater's guide to safe recycling

Residents in Clearwater are being reminded of the proper way to dispose of cooking grease. Pouring fats, oils, and greases down the drain can lead to blocked pipes and sewer issues. The city provides a dedicated drop-off point for safe disposal at any time of day.

Used cooking grease should be collected in a sturdy container and taken to the Solid Waste/Recycling drop-off facility. The centre, located at 1701 N. Hercules Ave., accepts fats, oils, and greases 24 hours a day. Once there, residents can empty their containers into the designated on-site collection barrel.

Containers with leftover grease residue cannot be recycled. Instead, they should be thrown away or taken home for reuse. The city has not issued an official press release on the matter, so the exact source of the guidelines remains unclear. For sewer-related emergencies, such as overflows, residents can call 727-562-4960 during working hours, Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Outside these times, the after-hours contact number is 727-462-6633.

The drop-off facility ensures grease is disposed of safely, reducing the risk of pipe blockages. Residents are encouraged to follow these steps to keep the city’s sewer system running smoothly. Proper disposal also helps avoid environmental harm from improper grease handling.
