Historic Soho Loft Transformed into Modern Art-filled Cocoon
Josephine and Aleks de Pfyffer have transformed their 2,400-square-foot penthouse loft in a historic Soho building. The couple hired Studio MBM to overhaul the space, which had not been renovated in three decades. The result is a cocoonlike library bathed in deep navy, with a glass-walled office and an open kitchen, dining area, and living room.
The loft's original features, such as glossy, black-painted floors and barrel-vaulted ceilings, were preserved. Designer Maurizio Bianchi Mattioli defined areas through color, lighting, and architectural alterations. He also preserved a 30-foot-long south-facing window installed by the previous owner.
The couple's art collection, including works by Gerasimos Floratos, is showcased throughout the loft. Josephine appreciated the open layout, unlike her childhood home in a prewar building with divided spaces. Alex was initially hesitant about a kitchen island but was won over by Mattioli's design in marble that appears to float.
The de Pfyffers' penthouse loft now reflects their personal style and taste. With its unique blend of historic features and modern design, it serves as a perfect blend of old and new. The couple's art collection adds a personal touch to the space, making it truly their own.
