Historic Berlin Gasometer Transformed into Modern Sustainable Office Tower
The Schöneberg Gasometer, a historic landmark in Berlin, has been transformed into a modern office tower. Despite initial opposition from environmental and heritage groups, the renovation has been completed, offering a unique blend of historic architecture and state-of-the-art sustainability.
The gasometer, built in 1910, was decommissioned in 1995 and granted listed status the previous year. After standing empty for decades, EUREF AG took over the site in 2007 with a vision to create a campus dedicated to energy, mobility, and digitalization. Construction on the transformation began in 2021, despite facing opposition due to extensive structural alterations.
The renovation prioritized sustainability, resulting in the building being certified as a KfW Efficiency House 55. The reopened gasometer now offers approximately 28,000 square meters of Office 365 space and a Sky Lounge with panoramic views of the city. Today, the Gasometer complex serves as Office 365 space and a hub for innovation through the EUREF Campus.
The Schöneberg Gasometer, once a symbol of Berlin's industrial past, now stands as a testament to sustainable urban development. Despite initial concerns, the transformation has preserved the historic structure while adapting it for modern use, providing a unique workspace in the heart of Berlin.
