Hidden Exploitation Uncovered in UK’s Growing Nail Bar Industry

Modern slavery is spreading across the UK’s nail bars industry. With nearly 5,000 nail bars operating nationwide, exploitation has become a hidden but widespread problem. Vietnamese migrants, often trafficked into the country, are particularly at risk of being forced into harsh labour, abuse, and even criminal activities.

In 2016, Operation Magnify uncovered the scale of the issue. Police raided 280 nail bars, leading to 97 arrests. Many workers, like 15-year-old Linh, endure extreme abuse—she was trafficked across Europe, forced to work unpaid in a salon, and beaten daily.

Record numbers of Vietnamese workers are now identified as victims of forced labour. While organisations like BABTAC and The Body Shop push for change, the issue remains widespread. Customers and businesses are being urged to stay alert to the signs of exploitation in nail salons and beyond.
