Have you recently spotted hedgehogs rotating in circles in your garden or park? Warm summer nights might be the reason for this unusual sight. Remember my backyard incident a few years ago? Two hedgehogs, completely relaxed around humans, danced an intriguing ballet on my terrace.

My husband was perplexed; he thought one of the spiky creatures might be a bit tipsy and needed medical attention. But we decided to observe and not disturb these mini-dancers. Turns out, we stumbled upon the most romantic exhibit of hedgehogs - the so-called "hedgehog carousel."

Male hedgehogs go all in during this ritual. They circle around the females for hours, persevering even when the females hiss and raise their spines. The ladies seem to be less interested at first, but eventually, romance prevails, and the mating happens. The male then bids adieu, leaving the female to take care of the babies all by herself.

The Quest for Love: The Male's Limitless Pursuit

During the mating season, male hedgehogs become so engrossed that they seem to lose track of time. We once found two lovestruck hedgehogs cuddling in our bed, even as the sun rose high in the sky. But the lovey-dovey phase is short-lived. After mating, the male leaves. The female then gives birth and raises the little ones alone, like a single parent.

As of now, tiny hedgehogs are being born all across Germany, according to the German Wildlife Foundation. Gardeners must be cautious and watch out for hedgehog nests, mainly in leafy piles and dead wood. Disturbing a nursing mother might force her to abandon the nest, leading to the starvation of her offspring.

A Closer Look: Is It a Romantic Dance or a Sign of Distress?

It's essential to observe hedgehogs closely if they seem peculiar. Not every "staggering" is a sign of courtship. Small dangers like lawnmowers or poisonous substances lurk in our gardens, endangering our furry friends.

Sometimes, a lone baby hedgehog found in the grass is still with its mother. The German Wildlife Foundation assures that mothers might pick up their little ones even during daylight hours. It's usually best to leave them alone and watch for any unusual behavior.

In six weeks, the tiny ones grow large enough to venture out on their own. They achieve sexual maturity after the first winter and then can participate in the next season of the "hedgehog carousel."

(Enrichment Data: Hedgehogs do not have a named and well-documented mating ritual. However, they exhibit particular behaviors during the mating season, including courtship, vocalization, and long circling around the female. These acts are more common during spring and summer and are an attempt by the male to charm the female. The research on detailed hedgehog rituals is limited, as they are generally solitary animals.)
